What is a Hot Water Tank and Heater?

You probably know what a hot water tank do; it heats up tap water and stores it for use, but that is not exactly what it is. Your hot water tank is comprised of several different components, a tank, a dip tube, a pressure release valve, a drain valve, and a sacrificial anode rod. These all work together to create the warm & hot water you and your family use to take showers and a variety of other tasks.

Let’s go over what these parts are in detail:

Dip Tube

The dip tube, located at the top of the hot water tank, serves as the entry point for the water and it goes into the tank in the combustion chamber to be heated. These tubes generally last as long as the hot water heater and are generally not prone to too many issues. However, if there is a crack in the dip tube, water entering the tank can cool down the heated water on its way out. This issue results in lukewarm water flowing through your pipes when you want hot. A plumber can identify any problems with a dip tube during a water heater inspection.

Tank

The tank is obviously what holds the water, but there are a few different types of tanks. Most homes in the country use a gas-fired water heater; the others are generally electric water heaters. A gas tank has an exhaust vent at the top to eliminate the exhaust gas, and electric water heaters have a line connecting to the home’s main electrical panel. Gas water heaters are less efficient than electric, but the replacement time is faster. Gas-powered water heaters are recommended for families, while a smaller home with fewer people can use an electric one.

Pressure Release Valve

The pressure release valve keeps pressure from building up inside the tank of the hot water heater. Minerals, salts, and other materials can block this valve. Leaks also frequently come from pressure valves; if you see a leak from the pressure valve, call your plumber.

Drain Valve

The drain valve, as you might have guessed, allows the water to exit the tank where it was heated and into your home.

Sacrificial anode rod

Iron, oxygen, and water are the main ingredients needed to produce rust. Since all three are present in a hot water heater, the rod prevents the tank from rusting. An anode rod is made of aluminum or magnesium. Due to the chemistry of the metals, they rust faster than what is used to build the tank. The rod attracts all of the rust that crops up, keeping the tank itself and the water inside it safe. This rod has also been given the name “sacrificial,” as it sacrifices itself to rust for the sake of the water in the tank.

An anode rod typically lasts up to three years. It’s important to have the rod replaced before it  Once the rod has rusted away completely, the tank itself will begin to rust, which can cause water heater failure. Rust in the tank can also cause your water to have a vague sulfur smell and taste.

How Does a Hot Water Tank and Heater Work?

Now that you know the different parts of a water heater, you can probably picture them all working together to heat the water you use inside your home. That process happens in the following steps:

1. Water travels through your home’s pipes and into the drip tube connected to your hot water tank.
2. The water reaches the bottom of the tank & then the heating element roars to life & starts heating the water until it reaches the temperature on the thermostat.
3. As the water heats, it rises to the top of the tank and into the heat-out pipe.
4. From there, the water enters your home through the pipes to whatever appliance or fixture requests.
5. While this is happening, the pressure release valve maintains the pressure inside the tank as the water travels around the home.
