Emergency AC Repair
in Columbus, OH

Emergency air conditioner repair. When your AC stops working in the middle of a Columbus summer, we dispatch a technician to your home as quickly as possible.

Is This an Emergency?

AC Completely Stopped

Your system won't turn on at all during extreme heat. If indoor temperatures are rising and you have vulnerable family members, call immediately.

Burning Smell

An electrical burning smell from your AC unit is a safety concern. Turn the system off right away and call for emergency service.

Refrigerant Leak

Hissing sounds, ice on the lines, or a sweet chemical smell can indicate a refrigerant leak. This requires professional repair.

Loud or Unusual Sounds

Grinding, banging, or screeching from your unit can mean a failing motor or loose internal components that could cause further damage.

Water Leaking & Causing Damage

Water pooling around your indoor unit can damage floors, walls, and ceilings. Turn the system off and call for service.

What to Do Right Now

1

Check the Basics

Verify your thermostat is set to cool and the batteries are fresh. Check your circuit breaker panel for a tripped breaker.

2

Turn Off the System if Necessary

If you smell burning, hear grinding, or see water leaking, turn off the system at the thermostat to prevent further damage.

3

Keep Cool While You Wait

Close blinds and curtains, use fans to circulate air, and stay hydrated. Keep pets in the coolest room of the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

An AC problem is an emergency when your system has completely stopped working during extreme heat, you smell burning from the unit, you see or suspect a refrigerant leak, water is leaking and causing damage, or there is a safety concern. If your system is running but cooling less effectively, making a minor noise, or showing thermostat quirks, you can likely schedule a standard repair instead.
If you hear grinding, banging, or smell something burning, turn the system off immediately and call for service. These sounds can indicate a failing motor, loose components, or an electrical issue that could cause further damage if the system keeps running. A minor humming or clicking sound is usually less urgent, but should still be checked by a technician.
Close blinds and curtains to block heat from the sun, use portable or ceiling fans to circulate air, stay hydrated and keep pets in the coolest room of the house. If it's cooler outside than inside, open windows. Do not try to fix the system yourself, as this can cause additional damage or void your warranty.
Emergency AC repair costs depend on the specific problem and parts required. The visit begins with a diagnostic fee, and you'll receive a transparent estimate with the full cost of parts and labor before any work begins. We won't proceed without your approval, so there are no surprise charges.
Contact us directly to confirm current after-hours pricing. Regardless of when you call, you'll always receive a transparent estimate before any work begins, so you'll know exactly what the repair will cost before we start.
We prioritize emergency calls and dispatch the nearest available technician. Response times vary based on demand and time of day, but our goal is to reach you as quickly as possible. When you call, we'll give you an estimated arrival window.
Common causes of sudden AC failure include a failed capacitor, an overheated compressor, an electrical issue such as a tripped breaker or blown fuse, or a frozen evaporator coil. These failures can happen at any time, especially during extended heat waves when the system is running harder than usual.
It's best to turn the system off if you see water leaking, as running it can cause further damage to the unit and your home. Check the drain pan and condensate line for visible clogs, but call for professional service to identify and fix the root cause before restarting.
A burning smell should be taken seriously. An electrical burning smell means you should turn off the system immediately and call for emergency service, as it could indicate an electrical fault or overheating component. A musty or dusty smell when the system first turns on is less urgent but should still be checked if it persists.
It depends on the conditions. During a Columbus heat wave with temperatures above 90°F, especially if you have elderly family members, young children, or pets at home, treat it as an emergency and call right away. In moderate weather, you can usually schedule a standard repair appointment.

The team from Fire & Ice replaced our heating and air conditioning system in our nearly impossibly small furnace room (I feared they would have to remove our hot water tank and move the washer & dryer to get access to the furnace unit) and the outside was also a task because it required a crane to get the A/C unit on the roof of our condo. The team of pros from Fire & Ice were able to accomplish all of these unusual tasks and kept me fully informed on what was needed for them to get our units replaced. We highly recommend Fire & Ice. Fire an Ice installed my furnace two years ago so I decided to use them to install my new a/c. Bryan did a great job reviewing all my options and working to get the financing that worked for me. He was also very patient with me and answered all my questions. Demetrius and Will did an amazing job! Considering all the work they did, they were done in four hours. I’m very pleased and would recommend Fire and Ice to anyone needing HVAC services

Scott Krouse

The sales experience with Luke was great. The installation team of Demetrius, Tyler and Hassan was fantastic. They were on time, were very thorough and did a great job. They take pride in their work and it shows with the final product. They were very respectful, cleaned up and it was a pleasure having them in our house. I highly recommend all these employees and this company. The company is fortunate to have them.

Brandon was the one who installed our new furnace. He was punctual and very professional. Our new furnace is working great and couldn’t be happier with how it looks. Bryan the sales rep was very informational without being pushy and helped us make the best decision for our house. I recommend anyone who needs a new Hvac unit to call fire and ice.

We had 2 AC systems relocated and replaced. Roger (our sales contact), spent most of the day with us calculating the load and measuring the house to ensure proper equipment sizing. Roger was very responsive in helping select a proper and sound location to install the new systems. He came out 3 times to answer questions and inspect the retaining wall/pad. On the day of install, Bryan, Nick and Luke were on time and very respectful of the home. They worked tirelessly the entire day (8am - 6pm) removing the old evaporator(s) and installing the new compressors. Everything was done neatly both inside and out. I would highly recommend their service to anyone considering a new system(s). We just followed up with a pair of new furnaces. Fast scheduling and efficient installation. Luke and Brandon protected the floor and cleaned up after the install.

Jon DeBarbrie

I had a positive experience with Fire and Ice in the past and my AC installation was even better. Brandon and DQ were very professional. Not only was the install super clean with an impressive 4 fitting duct bend sealed tight, but I needed to work from home during the install and I barely heard them throughout the day. I’ll be recommending F&I to all my friends.
