What’s an HSPF rating?
So let's jump in and see what's a HSPF rating HSPF rating stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. This rating is used to compare energy efficiencies between split system heat pumps. HSPF is used by all heat pump manufacturers to indicate efficiency ratings. Typically, heat pumps have an HSPF range from 6 to 11. The HSPF rating tells you how much heating effect in BTUs we will get per kilowatt per hour. So, for example, a heat pump with an 8 HSPF will give us 8 BTUs of heat for every kilowatt per hour.
The U.S. Department of Energy regulates the minimum energy efficiency standard for all heat pumps.
Why is an HSPF rating important?
Now, let's see why a HSPF rating is important. A higher HSPF rating means greater energy efficiency. The greater the energy efficiency means that you're not having to pay as much for the same level of heating. HSPF ratings also mattered to manufacturers and utility companies.
Often there will be incentives in the form of tax credits in rebates for high efficiency equipment.
What’s a good HSPF rating?
So, let's move on and cover what's a good HSPF rating. A minimum standard HSPF for a new heat pump is 7.7. A mid efficiency heat pump usually has an HSPF rating of at least 8.5, which earns an Energy Star label from the Department of Energy. And a high-efficiency unit has an HSPF rating of 10 or above. It's important to note that a good HSPF rating isn't the only factor in determining the right heat pump for your home.
There are several factors to consider. In addition to an HSPF rating for your heat pump. This includes the size of your home, the humidity and climate in the current heating and cooling system that is installed in your home.
So where would you find your current HSPF rating? Typically, if you look at the tag of the heat pump outside, you will find all that information there. If not, it certainly would be in the manual.
