What are the features of the Trane XV18 heat pump?

Let’s dive in and look at the features of the Trane XV18 heat pump. First, it has a variable-speed compressor. Now, what on earth does that mean? Think of it like cruise control for your heat pump. The XV18 automatically throttles its speed across 750 stages to keep up with demand. This means it uses between 25 and 100% of its capacity when it's running. Allowing the XV18 to keep temperatures inside your home within a half of a degree, solve humidity issues, and eliminate hot and cold spots or uneven temperatures between floors. Additionally, heat pumps also provide heat when it’s cold outside. The XV18’s variable-speed compressor allows it to continue to provide heat in temperatures far below that of average heat pumps -- as low as 17 degrees.

Next, is the Trane XV18’s sophisticated technology that tailors your HVAC system to your preferences. As a communicating system, the XV18 is able to learn your heating and cooling preferences and provide precise indoor comfort that is unique to your home.

Lastly, is its quiet operation. The XV18 can operate as quietly as 54 decibels when it’s running. For comparison, your average library is around 40 decibels.

What is the efficiency rating of the Trane XV18?

Heat pumps, like the Trane XV18, have two efficiency ratings because they heat and cool your home. On the cooling side, the Trane XV18 has up to 18 SEER rating. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating and is a score of how much energy heat pumps use to cool your home. For comparison, most heat pumps on the market today are rated between 14-22 SEER.

On the heating side, a heat pump’s efficiency is rated by an HSPF rating or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. HSPF rating measures heat pump efficiency during the average heating season. The average HSPF rating can range from 6 to 11. The Trane XV18 has an HSPF rating of up to 10.  This means the Trane XV18 heat pump is one of the most efficient heat pumps on the market.

What equipment can I pair with the Trane XV18?

As a communicating system the Trane XV18 works best when paired with a communicating, variable-speed air handler or gas furnace. For all electric systems, the Trane TAM9 or TEM8 air handlers could be paired with the Trane XV18. For dual fuel gas systems, you’ll want to look into pairing the XV18 with a Trane XC95m, XC80, or the Trane S9V2 with a compatible thermostat and relay panel.

Who is a good fit for the Trane XV18 heat pump?

The Trane XV18 heat pump is the ideal system for homeowners who have long-term plans of being in their home and want to have control over their indoor comfort. The Trane XV18 can help you address issues with humidity, uneven temperatures, hot and cold spots, and high energy bills. 

Here in Central Ohio, our winters can be harsh and cold. If you have an all-electric system, you likely know that when you have to rely on your air handler for heat your electric bill can go through the roof. Thanks to the Trane XV18’s variable speed compressor you’ll be able to continue using your heat pump in subfreezing temperatures.

Additionally, if you have issues with improperly sized or leaky ductwork the Trane XV18’s communicating system can help address some of those issues as it learns your system. Now, if you’re not planning on being your home for the next decade, you might not see a return on your investment. Additionally, if you’re on a tight budget or aren’t experiencing many comfort concerns or a large electric bill the Trane XV18 might be more heat pump than you need. If you’re simply looking to replace an aging heat pump the XV18 might not be for you.

How much does the Trane XV18 heat pump cost?

Now the question we’ve all been waiting for, how much does it cost. The Trane XV18 heat pump costs between $9,900 and $13,200. For comparison, an installing new heat pump can cost between $5,390 and $13,750. At Fire & Ice all of our estimates include the cost of equipment, labor, and any additional fees.

Keep in mind, heat pumps are unique and are seen in two configurations: either paired with a gas furnace in a dual fuel system or paired with an air handler in all electric systems. If you have an all-electric system, you’ll need to replace the air handler as well, adding around $3,850 to $6,600. 

There are several factors that can affect the price of a heat pump such as the size of your home, filters and other indoor air quality products, and any modifications that are needed to be made during installation. There is no-one-size fits all solution when it comes to HVAC systems and these factors are taken into consideration when determining the cost.
