Are you looking to replace your existing heat pump but not sure where to start? In this video, we’ll look at the Trane XR16 Heat Pump and go over its features and cost and see who might benefit most from this system.

Hi, I’m Brad with Fire & Ice. Each year we meet with thousands of Central Ohio homeowners and help them find the perfect HVAC system that will meet their individual needs. When it comes to heat pumps, we’re often asked if there’s a model that can help lower their energy bills and make them more comfortable while being easier on their budget. One of the more popular solutions is the Trane XR16 heat pump. In this video, we’ll go over its features and benefits, efficiency rating, compatible equipment pairings, and look at who will benefit most from this heat pump. We’ll even take a look at the cost. You’ll know if the Trane XR16 heat pump is right for you by the end of this video.

What are the features of the Trane XR16 heat pump?

First, is its single-stage compressor which means that everytime it kicks on its running at 100% capacity. This technology delivers reliable cooling time and time even on the hottest days of summer and consistent heating during the dead of winter. Additionally, the compressor comes with a 10 year manufacturer warranty giving you added protection and peace of mind.

The next feature is the XR16’s durable, no-frills design. Even though it may not have all the bells and whistles other heat pumps offer, it doesn’t mean it’s a low-quality system. In reality, every piece of equipment Trane makes is put through rigorous testing to make sure it continues to perform even in the harshest conditions.

What is the efficiency rating of the Trane XR16?

Like the Trane XR16, heat pumps are unique in that they have two efficiencies. One for heating and once for cooling. For cooling, they use a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER and a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor or HSPF for heating. Each is a measure of efficiency a heat pump has during an average heating and cooling season. The Trane XR16 has a SEER rating of up to 17 and an HSPF rating of up to 9.6; for comparison, most heat pumps on the market today are rated between 14 and 22 SEER and 7.7 to 11 HSPF.

What Equipment Can I Pair with the Trane XR16?

Another thing that makes heat pumps unique is that they need to be paired with another piece of HVAC equipment to work. The XR16 can be paired with any non-communicating electric air handler or gas furnace. You may want to consider the TEM4, TEM6, oror GAM5 air handlers for electric systems. The Trane S8X1, S8X2, or XV80 standard-efficiency gas furnaces will work for dual fuel setups. If you’re looking for high-efficiency options, consider the Trane S9X1, S9X2, or S9V2.

Who is the Trane XR16 heat pump a good fit for?

The Trane XR16 heat pump is ideal for homeowners looking for a heat pump that will deliver both performance and efficiency with excellent reliability. If you’re looking to save money on your energy bill, the Trane XR16 is worth considering. Homeowners who have switched to an XR16 from an older 10 SEER or less system have saved up to 54% on their HVAC costs. And if you live in Central Ohio and rely on electricity to heat your home, you’re likely all too familiar with how expensive it can be. Thankfully, the XR16 can continue to provide heat in temperatures as low as 17 degrees before emergency heat is needed. So if you’re looking for a solid, middle-of-the-road heat pump that will efficiently and reliably keep you comfortable at a lower initial investment, then the XR16 might be for you.

However, the Trane XR16 isn’t for everyone. If you have comfort concerns like uneven temperatures or hot and cold spots, you may consider other heat pumps with a higher-stage compressor. Additionally, the XR16 isn’t the quietest system at nearly 72 decibels. That’s slightly louder than the average conversation. If you’re looking to move shortly and aren’t looking to spend a lot on a new heat pump, then XR16 might be more system than you need.

How much does the Trane XR16 heat pump cost?

Now last but not least, how much does it cost? To have the Trane XR16 installed in your home, expect to pay between $8,580 and $10,890. At Fire & Ice, all of our estimates include the cost of equipment, labor, and any additional fees. A new heat pump installation ranges between $5,390 and $13,750. And don’t forget heat pumps need to be paired with a compatible electric air handler or a gas furnace to work correctly. Electric air handlers can add an additional $3,850 and $7,370. For dual fuel systems, adding a gas furnace can cost an extra $3,300 and $8,360.

Several factors can affect the price of a heat pump, such as the size of your home, filters, and other indoor air quality products, as well as modifications needed during installation. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to HVAC systems.
