Ductless Mini-Split Installation & Service in Columbus, OH
Heating and cooling for the rooms your central system can't reach. Quiet, efficient, and installed in as little as one day.
What Is a Ductless Mini-Split?
A ductless mini-split is a heating and cooling system that works without ductwork. It has two parts: a compact indoor unit mounted on your wall, and an outdoor condenser connected by a small refrigerant line through a 3-inch opening in your wall.
Because it's a heat pump, a single mini-split unit handles both heating and cooling. No separate furnace and AC required. In summer, it pulls heat out of your home. In winter, it reverses the process and pulls heat energy from the outdoor air, even in freezing temperatures.
Mini-splits are the most efficient HVAC option available. They avoid the energy losses that come with ductwork. Central systems lose up to 30% of conditioned air in ducts. Modern inverter-driven compressors adjust output continuously rather than cycling on and off.
Is Ductless Right for Your Home?
Mini-splits aren't the answer for every home, but they're the best answer for these.
Room Additions & Sunrooms
Added a room, finished a basement, or enclosed a porch? Extending your existing ductwork is expensive and often impractical. A single-zone mini-split heats and cools the new space independently.
Converted Garages & ADUs
Garage conversions, guest houses, and accessory dwelling units need their own climate control. A mini-split gives them a self-contained system without tying into the main house.
The Room That's Always Too Hot or Too Cold
Every house has one. Your central system can't fix it because the problem is the ductwork, the insulation, or the room's position. A mini-split solves the room, not the whole system.
Homes Without Ductwork
Older homes, historic properties, and some construction styles were never built for ducts. A mini-split provides whole-home heating and cooling without tearing into walls and ceilings.
Replacing Electric Baseboard Heat
Electric baseboard is expensive to run. A mini-split delivers up to three times more heat per unit of electricity. The energy savings alone often pay for the system over time.
Home Offices & Finished Attics
Spaces where you spend hours but the central system barely reaches. A mini-split gives you independent temperature control exactly where you need it.
What Happens During Installation
Most single-zone installations are completed in one day. Here's the process.
Site Assessment & Sizing
A technician evaluates your space, calculates the heating and cooling load, and recommends the right unit size and placement. Oversizing wastes energy; undersizing can't keep up. Getting this right matters.
Indoor Unit Mounting
The indoor air handler is mounted high on an exterior wall, secured to studs with a level bracket. It needs about 6 inches of clearance on all sides for airflow.
Connecting Indoor to Outdoor
A small hole (about 3 inches) is drilled through the exterior wall. The refrigerant line, electrical supply, and condensate drain run through this opening to the outdoor unit. The hole is sealed and covered.
Outdoor Unit Placement
The condenser is placed on a concrete pad, wall bracket, or roof bracket outside. Placement is chosen for proper clearance, noise considerations, and aesthetics.
System Test
Once connected, the system is pressure-tested for leaks, then run in both heating and cooling modes to verify performance. We confirm everything is working before we leave.
Single-zone: 4-8 hours (one day). Multi-zone (2-3 rooms): 6-10 hours (one day). Whole-home (4-5 rooms): 1-2 days.
Yes, Mini-Splits Heat in Ohio Winters
This is the most common question we get, and the answer might surprise you.
A mini-split is a heat pump. It extracts heat energy from outdoor air and moves it inside. Even when it's 10°F outside, there's heat energy available, and modern cold-climate compressors are engineered to capture it.
Today's cold-climate mini-splits operate down to -13°F and retain 70-90% of their rated heating capacity in extreme cold. Columbus winters average 20-30°F with cold snaps into single digits, well within the comfortable operating range.
As Your Primary Heat Source
In well-insulated homes, additions, or new construction without ductwork, a properly sized multi-zone system can be your only heating system.
As a Supplement to Your Furnace
For rooms your central system can't keep warm, a single-zone mini-split fills the gap without replacing anything.
As a Replacement for Electric Baseboard
This is where the savings are most dramatic. A mini-split delivers up to 3x more heat per unit of electricity than baseboard resistance heating.
Signs Your Mini-Split Needs Service
Weak or Reduced Airflow
Air isn't coming out as strong as it used to. Start by cleaning the filters. This is the most common cause. If airflow doesn't improve after cleaning, the fan motor or blower may need attention.
Not Heating or Cooling Properly
The system runs but the air temperature isn't right. This can indicate low refrigerant, a dirty evaporator coil, or a compressor issue. Call for a diagnostic.
Ice on the Indoor Coil
Visible ice or frost on the evaporator coil means something is restricting airflow or refrigerant levels are low. Turn the system off and call for service. Running it with ice buildup can damage the compressor.
Water Dripping from Indoor Unit
Water leaking from the wall unit usually means a clogged condensate drain line. It can also result from a frozen coil that's thawing. Either way, it needs professional attention before it damages your wall or floor.
Unusual Noises
Rattling, buzzing, or grinding sounds point to loose components, fan issues, or motor problems. A clicking sound during startup is normal. Sustained noise during operation is not.
Musty or Burning Smell
A musty smell means mold or mildew is growing inside the unit, common if filters aren't cleaned regularly. A burning smell means an electrical problem. Turn the system off immediately and call for service.
Keeping Your Mini-Split Running Well
What You Can Do
Clean the filters every 2-4 weeks.
This is the single most important thing you can do. Open the front panel of the indoor unit, slide out the mesh filters, and vacuum both sides. If they're very dirty, wash them with warm water and mild soap. Let them dry completely before reinstalling. Wet filters grow mildew.
Keep the outdoor unit clear.
Remove leaves, grass clippings, and debris from around the condenser. In winter, clear snow buildup. Maintain a few inches of clearance on all sides.
Check the condensate drain.
The drain line carries moisture out of the indoor unit. If it clogs, water backs up and drips inside. A quick visual check every month catches problems early.
What We Do (Professional Maintenance)
- Deep-clean the evaporator coil inside the air handler
- Check refrigerant levels and inspect for leaks
- Inspect all electrical connections
- Clean the outdoor condenser coil
- Test the system in both heating and cooling modes
- Check for developing issues: worn bearings, fan motor degradation, drain line buildup
We recommend professional maintenance twice a year, once before cooling season and once before heating season. Our Happy Home Club members get this included.

When Ductless Isn't the Best Choice
- • You have a large home with existing ductwork in good condition. Central air is simpler and less expensive to maintain.
- • The look of a wall-mounted unit is a dealbreaker. Ceiling cassette options exist for a more discreet installation.
- • You have a very large open floor plan that one ducted system handles efficiently.
- • You need temporary cooling on a tight budget. A window unit costs a fraction of a mini-split.
Rebates & Incentives for Mini-Split Installation
The federal 25C tax credit for energy-efficient HVAC equipment expired at the end of 2025. However, several incentive programs are still available:
- HEEHRA (federal, income-qualified): Eligible homeowners may receive up to $8,000 toward a heat pump installation at the point of sale.
- Utility rebates: Many Ohio utilities offer rebates of $300-$1,800 for qualifying heat pump installations. Ask us about current programs from your provider.
- Important: Only heat pump models that provide both heating and cooling qualify for most incentive programs. Cooling-only units typically don't.
We can help you identify which incentives apply to your installation during the estimate process.
