Water Heater Services in Columbus, Ohio
Water heater repair, installation, and replacement - tank and tankless, gas and electric. Our licensed plumbers diagnose the problem and give you a clear estimate before any work begins.
Common Water Heater Problems
No Hot Water
The most urgent water heater problem. Could be a failed heating element, a bad thermocouple or gas valve, a tripped breaker, or a pilot light that went out. We diagnose the cause and repair or replace as needed.
Not Enough Hot Water
Running out of hot water faster than you used to. Common causes: sediment buildup reducing tank capacity, a failing lower heating element, or a thermostat issue. May also mean your household has outgrown the tank size.
Temperature Fluctuating
Scalding water or temperatures that swing between hot and cold. Usually a thermostat problem, a failing mixing valve, or - in tankless systems - a flow sensor issue.
Leaking Water Heater
Water pooling around the base of the tank. Could be a leaking T&P relief valve, a corroded tank, or a leaking supply connection. A leaking tank itself usually means replacement - the tank can't be patched.
Rumbling or Popping Noises
Sediment has hardened at the bottom of the tank and is being heated and cracked by the burner. Not dangerous, but it means the tank needs flushing - and if left too long, the sediment accelerates corrosion.
Rusty or Discolored Hot Water
Rusty water from the hot side only means the anode rod has failed and the tank is corroding from the inside. If the water heater is under 8 years old, replacing the anode rod may extend its life. If older, the tank is likely failing.
Water Heater Repair
We repair all types of residential water heaters - gas tank, electric tank, and tankless.
Common repairs include thermostat replacement, heating element replacement, thermocouple and gas valve repair, T&P valve replacement, anode rod replacement, and pilot light and ignitor issues. Our plumber diagnoses the problem on-site and gives you a clear estimate before starting work. If the repair cost approaches replacement cost, we'll tell you - and help you decide which makes more sense.
Our trucks carry the most common water heater parts - heating elements, thermocouples, T&P valves, and anode rods. Most repairs are completed on the first visit.
Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters
Tank Water Heaters
- ✓ Store 40-50 gallons of hot water, ready when you need it
- ✓ Lower upfront cost - straightforward installation when replacing an existing tank
- ✓ 8-12 year typical lifespan
- ✓ Work with existing gas or electric connections
- ✓ Best for most Columbus homes, especially those with existing tank infrastructure
Tankless Water Heaters
- ✓ Heat water on demand - you don't run out
- ✓ Higher upfront cost but lower monthly operating cost
- ✓ 15-20 year typical lifespan
- ✓ May require upgraded gas line or electrical service
- ✓ Best for smaller households, homes with limited space, or homeowners planning to stay long-term
Not sure which is right for your home? We'll evaluate your household's demand, your existing infrastructure, and your budget - and give you an honest recommendation.
Repair or Replace Your Water Heater?
Repair Makes Sense If
- ✓ Water heater is less than 8 years old
- ✓ This is the first major issue
- ✓ Repair cost is well below half of replacement
- ✓ No tank leak - the tank itself is intact
Replace Is Usually the Better Investment If
- ✗ Water heater is 10+ years old (tank) or 15+ years old (tankless)
- ✗ Tank is leaking from the base
- ✗ Rusty hot water and the anode rod is already spent
- ✗ Multiple repairs in the last two years
- ✗ Energy bills are climbing and the unit is losing efficiency
Not sure? Our plumber will give you an honest assessment. If a repair makes sense, we'll say so.
Water Heater Installation
Whether you're replacing an aging unit or choosing a new system for a remodel, here's what installation with us looks like:
Assessment
We evaluate your household's hot water demand, your existing gas or electrical infrastructure, and the physical space. We size the water heater to your actual needs - not oversized, not undersized.
Recommendation & Estimate
You get a clear recommendation with upfront pricing before any work begins. We'll explain the options and why we're recommending what we're recommending.
Installation
We handle everything: removal and disposal of the old unit, all plumbing connections, gas line work or electrical wiring as needed, proper venting for gas units, and code-required safety features.
Permits & Inspection
Columbus and most central Ohio municipalities require a plumbing permit for water heater installation. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and make sure the job passes.
Water Heater Maintenance
Annual maintenance extends your water heater's life and keeps it running efficiently. A maintenance visit includes:
- Flush the tank to remove sediment buildup
- Inspect and test the T&P (temperature and pressure) relief valve
- Check the anode rod - the sacrificial rod that protects the tank from corrosion
- Inspect gas connections or electrical elements
- Check the vent and flue (gas units)
- Verify thermostat accuracy
Water heater service is included in our Happy Home Club maintenance plans.
