Boiler Repair
in Columbus, OH

Factory-trained technicians diagnose and repair all residential boiler types. We give you a clear estimate with the full cost before any work begins.

Common Boiler Problems

No Heat or Hot Water

Your boiler won't fire or the radiators stay cold. This can be caused by a thermostat failure, a tripped breaker, a pilot light or ignition problem, or a gas supply issue. Check your thermostat settings and breaker first. If those are fine, call for service.

Boiler Leaking Water

Water pooling around the boiler, dripping from pipes, or wet spots nearby. Leaks can come from a faulty pressure relief valve, corroded pipes, worn pump seals, or a cracked heat exchanger. Don't ignore a leak. It can cause water damage and indicates a component that needs replacement.

Kettling (Rumbling or Banging Noises)

Your boiler sounds like a kettle coming to boil: rumbling, banging, or whistling. This is usually caused by limescale or sludge buildup on the heat exchanger, which restricts water flow and causes localized boiling. A professional flush resolves it.

Pressure Loss

The pressure gauge reads below normal and the system may shut down. Common causes: a slow leak somewhere in the system, a failed pressure relief valve, or an expansion tank issue. Topping up the pressure is a temporary fix. The underlying cause needs diagnosis.

Uneven Radiator Heating

Some radiators are hot while others stay cold. Usually caused by trapped air in the system (fixed by bleeding the radiators) or a circulation pump issue. If bleeding doesn't help, sludge buildup in the pipes may be restricting flow.

Boiler Lockouts

Your boiler shuts itself off and displays an error code. Lockouts are a safety mechanism. The system detected a fault and stopped itself to prevent damage or danger. Note the error code and call for service. Don't repeatedly reset a locked-out boiler without diagnosis.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Boiler?

Consider a Repair If:

  • ✓ Your boiler is under 10 years old
  • ✓ This is the first major issue
  • ✓ The repair cost is well below 50% of replacement
  • ✓ Parts are readily available for your model
  • ✓ Your energy bills have been stable

Consider Replacing If:

  • ✗ Your boiler is over 15 years old
  • ✗ You've had 3 or more repairs in the past year
  • ✗ Visible corrosion on the body or connections
  • ✗ Persistent leaks that keep returning after repair
  • ✗ Cracked heat exchanger (safety issue)

Our technicians will give you an honest assessment during the repair visit. If replacement makes more sense, we'll walk you through your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

The issues we see most often: no heat or hot water, water leaks around the boiler, pressure loss (gauge reading below normal), kettling noises (rumbling, banging, or whistling), pilot light that won't stay lit, uneven radiator heating (some hot, some cold), and boiler lockouts (system shuts itself off and displays an error code). Some of these have simple causes like a tripped breaker, air in the radiators, or a thermostat setting. Others require professional diagnosis. If basic checks don't resolve the problem, call for service.
General rule: if your boiler is under 10 years old and the issue is minor with parts readily available, repair it. If it's over 15 years old with recurring breakdowns, visible corrosion, persistent leaks, or a cracked heat exchanger, replacement is usually the better investment. A useful benchmark: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of what a new system would cost, lean toward replacing. Our technicians give honest assessments during the repair visit and don't push replacements when they aren't warranted.
It depends on the severity. A small drip from a valve fitting may be a routine repair, but you should still get it looked at before it worsens. Active leaking, water pooling around the boiler, or leaks near electrical components should be treated as urgent. Turn the boiler off and call for service. If you smell gas alongside a leak, leave the house immediately and call your gas company or 911 from outside.

I had a positive experience with Fire and Ice in the past and my AC installation was even better. Brandon and DQ were very professional. Not only was the install super clean with an impressive 4 fitting duct bend sealed tight, but I needed to work from home during the install and I barely heard them throughout the day. I’ll be recommending F&I to all my friends.

We had 2 AC systems relocated and replaced. Roger (our sales contact), spent most of the day with us calculating the load and measuring the house to ensure proper equipment sizing. Roger was very responsive in helping select a proper and sound location to install the new systems. He came out 3 times to answer questions and inspect the retaining wall/pad. On the day of install, Bryan, Nick and Luke were on time and very respectful of the home. They worked tirelessly the entire day (8am - 6pm) removing the old evaporator(s) and installing the new compressors. Everything was done neatly both inside and out. I would highly recommend their service to anyone considering a new system(s). We just followed up with a pair of new furnaces. Fast scheduling and efficient installation. Luke and Brandon protected the floor and cleaned up after the install.

Brandon was the one who installed our new furnace. He was punctual and very professional. Our new furnace is working great and couldn’t be happier with how it looks. Bryan the sales rep was very informational without being pushy and helped us make the best decision for our house. I recommend anyone who needs a new Hvac unit to call fire and ice.

The sales experience with Luke was great. The installation team of Demetrius, Tyler and Hassan was fantastic. They were on time, were very thorough and did a great job. They take pride in their work and it shows with the final product. They were very respectful, cleaned up and it was a pleasure having them in our house. I highly recommend all these employees and this company. The company is fortunate to have them.

Fire an Ice installed my furnace two years ago so I decided to use them to install my new a/c. Bryan did a great job reviewing all my options and working to get the financing that worked for me. He was also very patient with me and answered all my questions. Demetrius and Will did an amazing job! Considering all the work they did, they were done in four hours. I’m very pleased and would recommend Fire and Ice to anyone needing HVAC services
