Warning Signs Your Sewer Line Needs Attention
Multiple Drains Backing Up
When more than one drain slows or backs up at the same time, the problem is almost always in the main sewer line - not individual fixtures. Flushing a toilet and hearing gurgling in a sink is a classic sign.
Recurring Clogs
A drain that clogs again within weeks of being cleared usually means the clog isn't the real problem. Tree roots, pipe deterioration, or a bellied section is causing repeat blockages that snaking alone won't solve.
Sewage Smell in the Yard or Basement
Sewer gas smell indoors - not from a dried P-trap - or outdoors near the sewer line path indicates a crack, break, or failed joint that's letting gas escape.
Wet or Sunken Spots in the Yard
A patch of lawn that's unusually green, soft, or saturated - especially along the path from your house to the street - may indicate a leaking or broken sewer line beneath the surface.
Slow Drains Throughout the House
If every drain in the house is slow, the main sewer line is partially blocked or has reduced capacity from buildup, root intrusion, or pipe collapse. This isn't a fixture problem - it's a main line problem.
Foundation Cracks or Settling
A severe sewer line leak under or near your foundation can erode soil and cause settling. This is rare but serious. If you notice new cracks in your foundation along with any of the above signs, get the sewer line inspected.
Video Camera Sewer Inspection
Before we recommend any repair, we put a camera in the pipe. A waterproof sewer camera on a flexible cable gives us a real-time view of the pipe interior - root intrusion, cracks, offset joints, bellied sections, collapsed pipe, and buildup are all visible on the monitor.
We use camera inspection when you have recurring clogs, after a sewer backup, before committing to a repair method, and as part of any pre-purchase plumbing evaluation for older homes. The camera is inserted through your cleanout, and we walk you through the findings on a monitor in real time. You'll see exactly what we see - and understand the problem, its location, and the recommended repair before any work begins.
Sewer Line Cleaning
Not every sewer line problem requires a structural repair. Sometimes the pipe is intact but needs to be cleaned.
Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water - up to 4,000 PSI - to scour the interior of the sewer line, removing grease buildup, mineral deposits, and small root intrusion. It restores the pipe close to its original diameter and is especially effective as preventive maintenance for lines with a history of recurring problems.
Mechanical snaking and rooter service use a powered cutting head to break through blockages and cut tree roots at the joints. It's the right first move when a main line is fully blocked and needs to be opened quickly.
When cleaning is enough, we'll tell you. When the camera shows structural damage that cleaning won't fix, we'll show you what we're looking at and walk you through the repair options.
Trenchless Pipe Lining (CIPP)
Cured-in-place pipe lining lets us rehabilitate a damaged sewer line from the inside - no excavation required for most installations. A resin-saturated liner is inserted into the existing pipe, inflated to press against the pipe walls, and cured in place. The result is a smooth, jointless pipe within the old one.
CIPP lining works well for pipes with cracks, minor root damage, and joint offsets - as long as the pipe is structurally intact and hasn't collapsed. The new liner has an expected service life of 50 years or more and resists future root intrusion because there are no joints for roots to exploit.
The process: camera inspection to verify candidacy, liner preparation, insertion and inflation, curing, and post-cure camera verification. We confirm the result before we consider the job done.
When it doesn't work: Collapsed pipes, severe bellying, or significant diameter changes require a different approach. The camera inspection tells us whether lining is a viable option for your line.
Pipe Bursting (Trenchless Replacement)
When the old pipe is too damaged for lining but the path is relatively straight, pipe bursting lets us replace the sewer line without tearing up your yard. A new HDPE pipe is pulled through the old one, breaking the old pipe apart as it goes. The new pipe takes its place - same path, no open trench.
Pipe bursting requires access pits at each end of the section being replaced, but those are small compared to the full-length trench required by traditional excavation. It's faster, less disruptive, and preserves your landscaping, driveway, and other surface structures.
Not every line is a candidate. Significant bends, depth changes, or situations where the pipe path needs to be rerouted require traditional excavation. We evaluate every line with a camera inspection before recommending a method.
Traditional Sewer Line Replacement
Some situations require excavation. When the pipe has collapsed, has severe bellying that needs grade correction, runs under structures where trenchless access isn't possible, or needs to be rerouted, traditional dig-and-replace is the right method.
We excavate from the house to the street connection, remove the old pipe, install new pipe (PVC or HDPE), backfill, and restore the surface. Many older Columbus neighborhoods have sewer lines running under driveways, sidewalks, or mature landscaping - we discuss surface restoration as part of the estimate so you know what to expect before we start.
Sewer Cleanout Installation
A cleanout is an above-ground access point to your sewer line - usually a capped pipe near the foundation. Without one, accessing the sewer line for inspection or cleaning requires removing a toilet or cutting into a drain line. A cleanout makes all future sewer service faster and less expensive.
Many older Columbus homes don't have one. We install cleanouts as a standalone service or as part of any sewer line repair.
Sewer Line Repair vs. Replacement
Repair May Be Enough If
- ✓ Damage is limited to one section
- ✓ Pipe is structurally intact - not collapsed or severely bellied
- ✓ Root intrusion is at joints but pipe walls are sound
- ✓ Camera inspection confirms the pipe is a candidate for lining
Full Replacement Is Usually the Right Call If
- ✗ Pipe has collapsed in one or more sections
- ✗ Multiple points of damage throughout the line
- ✗ Significant belly or sag that traps waste and water
- ✗ Pipe material is actively deteriorating - crumbling clay, corroded cast iron
- ✗ Repeated repairs haven't solved the problem
Not sure? A camera inspection tells us exactly what we're dealing with. We'll show you the footage and walk you through your options.
Sewer Lines in Columbus-Area Homes
Pipe materials by era. Homes built before the 1950s often have clay tile sewer lines. 1950s through the 1970s: cast iron. 1970s onward: PVC. Each material has different failure modes - clay cracks at joints and invites root intrusion, cast iron corrodes from the inside out, and PVC is the most durable but can still be damaged by ground movement or improper installation.
Combined sewer systems. Many older Columbus neighborhoods have combined storm and sanitary sewers. During heavy rain, the system can overwhelm and back up through basement floor drains. This isn't always a sewer line problem - it's an infrastructure problem. We can evaluate whether the backup is your line or the city's system.
City vs. homeowner responsibility. In Columbus, the homeowner is responsible for the sewer lateral - the pipe that runs from the house to the city main, usually at or near the street. The city maintains the main. If your lateral fails, the repair cost is yours.
