Is This a Plumbing Emergency?
Burst or Leaking Pipe
Water spraying, pooling on floors, or running behind walls. A burst pipe can release hundreds of gallons per day. Shut off your main water valve and call immediately.
Sewer Backup
Sewage coming up through drains, toilets, or your basement floor drain. This is a health hazard. Stop using all water fixtures and call. Multiple drains backing up at once usually means the main sewer line is blocked.
No Water
Turned on the faucet and nothing comes out, but your water bill is paid and there's no shutoff notice. Could be a main water line break, a frozen pipe, or a valve failure. Call for diagnosis.
Flooding Basement
Water rising in your basement from any source - sump pump failure, backed-up drain, burst pipe, or water heater failure. Water near electrical panels or outlets is a safety hazard. Don't wade through it.
Water Heater Leaking or Failed
A leaking water heater can flood a utility room or basement quickly. If you see water pooling around the base, shut off the cold water supply valve on top of the tank and call. A failing pressure relief valve or corroded tank can escalate fast.
Frozen Pipes
Common in central Ohio winters when temperatures drop below 20°F. If a pipe has frozen but not yet burst, we may be able to thaw it safely before it fails. If it's already burst, shut off the main water valve and call.
What to Do Right Now
Shut Off the Water
If water is actively flowing where it shouldn't be, locate your main water shutoff valve and turn it off. In most Columbus-area homes, the shutoff is in the basement near where the water line enters the house. For water heater problems, use the shutoff valve on the cold water line above the tank.
Turn Off the Water Heater (If Applicable)
If your water heater is leaking or you've shut off the water supply, turn off the water heater to prevent it from running dry. Gas: turn the gas valve to "off." Electric: flip the breaker.
Contain the Water
Use towels, buckets, and a wet/dry vacuum if you have one. Move valuables and electronics away from standing water. If water is near electrical outlets or your breaker panel, don't wade through it - shut off the breaker from a dry location if you can reach it safely, or wait for help.

Protect Your Home
Plumbing emergencies can create serious safety risks. Know what to do.
Know Your Shutoff Valve
Every homeowner should know where their main water shutoff valve is before they need it. In most Columbus homes, it's in the basement on the wall facing the street. Test it once a year to make sure it turns easily. In an emergency, seconds matter.
Water Near Electricity
Standing water near electrical outlets, panels, or appliances is a safety hazard. Do not walk through standing water if it may be in contact with electrical sources. Shut off the breaker from a dry location if you can reach it safely, or wait for help.
Sewage Exposure
Sewer backups contain bacteria and pathogens. Don't handle sewage water without gloves and protective gear. Keep children and pets away from affected areas. Professional cleanup is recommended for any significant sewage exposure in your home.

Once the crisis is resolved, here's how to prevent the next one.
