Heat Pump Heating & Cooling in Central Ohio

A heat pump is a single system that handles both heating and cooling for your home. In summer, it works like a central air conditioner, pulling heat out of your house and releasing it outside. In winter, it reverses the process and extracts heat from outdoor air, even in cold temperatures. One system, one maintenance schedule.

Heat pumps are the fastest-growing heating technology in central Ohio. Modern cold-climate models work efficiently through Columbus winters, and many homeowners are making the switch, either going all-electric or pairing a heat pump with a gas furnace backup (dual fuel) for maximum efficiency across the full range of Ohio weather.

If you already have a heat pump, we service all brands and handle everything from emergency repair to annual maintenance. If you're considering one, we can help you compare configurations and find what fits your home.

Heat Pump Configurations

Heat Pump Only

All-electric heating and cooling from one system. Modern cold-climate units handle Columbus weather efficiently in all but the most extreme conditions. Best for homeowners who want to eliminate gas entirely or homes without gas lines.

Dual Fuel

Pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace backup. The heat pump runs efficiently in mild-to-moderate cold; the furnace takes over only on the coldest nights. The most popular configuration in central Ohio, combining the best of both technologies.

With Electric Backup

Uses electric resistance heat strips instead of a gas furnace for backup heating. Fully electric with no gas infrastructure needed. Higher operating cost on the coldest days than dual fuel, but eliminates gas dependency entirely.

Is It Time to Repair or Replace?

Consider a Repair If:

  • ✓ Your heat pump is less than 10 years old
  • ✓ This is the first major issue
  • ✓ The repair cost is less than half the cost of a new system
  • ✓ Your energy bills have been consistent

Consider Replacing If:

  • ✗ Your heat pump is 15 years old or older
  • ✗ You've had multiple repairs in recent years
  • ✗ Your system uses R-22 (Freon) refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured
  • ✗ Compressor failure (often costs more than a new system)

Not sure? Our technicians give honest assessments. If a repair makes sense, we'll tell you. We don't push replacements when they aren't needed.

Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps with variable-speed compressors maintain full rated heating capacity down to around 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Columbus January lows average around 22 degrees, well within efficient operating range. For the handful of nights that drop below 10 degrees, a dual-fuel setup pairs your heat pump with a gas furnace backup. The heat pump handles mild-to-moderate cold at high efficiency; the furnace takes over only when it's coldest. Most Columbus homeowners with heat pumps use a dual-fuel configuration for this reason.
A furnace burns gas to create heat. A heat pump moves heat from outdoor air into your home, which takes less energy than creating it from scratch. Heat pumps also cool your home in summer, replacing both your furnace and your AC with one system. Trade-offs: furnaces have lower upfront cost and work with existing gas infrastructure. Heat pumps are more efficient overall, qualify for more rebates, and eliminate the need for a separate air conditioner. Many Columbus homeowners choose dual fuel (a heat pump paired with a gas furnace) to get the efficiency benefits without giving up gas backup.

I had a positive experience with Fire and Ice in the past and my AC installation was even better. Brandon and DQ were very professional. Not only was the install super clean with an impressive 4 fitting duct bend sealed tight, but I needed to work from home during the install and I barely heard them throughout the day. I’ll be recommending F&I to all my friends.

We had 2 AC systems relocated and replaced. Roger (our sales contact), spent most of the day with us calculating the load and measuring the house to ensure proper equipment sizing. Roger was very responsive in helping select a proper and sound location to install the new systems. He came out 3 times to answer questions and inspect the retaining wall/pad. On the day of install, Bryan, Nick and Luke were on time and very respectful of the home. They worked tirelessly the entire day (8am - 6pm) removing the old evaporator(s) and installing the new compressors. Everything was done neatly both inside and out. I would highly recommend their service to anyone considering a new system(s). We just followed up with a pair of new furnaces. Fast scheduling and efficient installation. Luke and Brandon protected the floor and cleaned up after the install.

Brandon was the one who installed our new furnace. He was punctual and very professional. Our new furnace is working great and couldn’t be happier with how it looks. Bryan the sales rep was very informational without being pushy and helped us make the best decision for our house. I recommend anyone who needs a new Hvac unit to call fire and ice.

The sales experience with Luke was great. The installation team of Demetrius, Tyler and Hassan was fantastic. They were on time, were very thorough and did a great job. They take pride in their work and it shows with the final product. They were very respectful, cleaned up and it was a pleasure having them in our house. I highly recommend all these employees and this company. The company is fortunate to have them.

Fire an Ice installed my furnace two years ago so I decided to use them to install my new a/c. Bryan did a great job reviewing all my options and working to get the financing that worked for me. He was also very patient with me and answered all my questions. Demetrius and Will did an amazing job! Considering all the work they did, they were done in four hours. I’m very pleased and would recommend Fire and Ice to anyone needing HVAC services
