What is an AFUE rating?
So, let's jump right in and see what an official rating AFUE stands for and you will fuel utilization efficiency. This rating is a measure of furnace efficiency. It's measured in percentage points, up to 100%.
The percentage shows how much usable heat is produced by a furnace. Let's take the Trane XC95m, for example. It has an AFUE rating of up to 97%. This means that 97% of the fuel it burns goes to heating your home, while only 3% will be wasted in the heating process. This rating was created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. An AFUE rating is a mandatory rating standard by the Department of Energy.
Why is an AFUE rating important?
Now let's see why an AFUE rating is important. A higher AFUE rating means greater energy efficiency. The lower amount of fuel that is wasted means that you're not having to pay as much in the same level of heating AFUE. Ratings also matter to manufacturers and utility companies. Often there will be incentives in the form of tax credits and rebates for higher efficiency equipment.
What’s a good AFUE rating?
So, let's move on and cover what's a good AFUE rating. The minimum standard AFUE for new furnaces is about 78% amid efficiency. Furnace usually has an AFUE rating between 80 and 85%, while a high efficiency unit has a rating between 1990 7%. It's important to note that a good AFUE rating isn't the only factor in determining the right furnace for your home.
There are several factors to consider. In addition to AFUE rating of your furnace. This includes the size of your home, the humidity, and climate, and the current heating and cooling system that is installed in your home.

You could go to your furnace and look at the BTU input matched by the BTU output, and that would determine what actual percentage your furnace is producing.
