As shocking as it may seem, 21% of U.S. adults can't read, and another 54% only have a 6th-grade education. That said, it's more important than ever to make sure the kids of today who become adults tomorrow have the education needed not to become part of these statistics. Many other local businesses and community members also participated in the Salem Elementary Family Literacy, including, but not limited to:

-Salem Garden Collaborative (community gardens)

-YMCA off of Karl Rd

-Local Matters (food and nutrition education and advocacy)

-Cap4Kids (science and technology education)

-Keep Columbus Beautiful (recycling and environmental advocacy)

-Columbus City Schools departments and resources related to summer programs and technology assistance

Family Literacy Night saw an impressive turnout, with over 30 families coming together to celebrate and engage in several literacy activities. During the event, Fire & Ice Heating and Air Conditioning had a room where children and their families were introduced to the fascinating world of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), focusing on key concepts that play a crucial role in our everyday comfort, energy usage, and environmental awareness, such as

  • Climate
  • Thermal
  • Efficiency
  • Moisture
  • and more!

Furthermore, Fire & Ice provided a hands-on experience with PVC pipes. By allowing children to play and experiment with the same type of pipes, our technicians and installers use out in the field to construct condensate drains, fresh air intakes, and exhaust systems. (See Photos Below)

These hands-on experiences provided a great learning experience demonstrating these systems' importance in maintaining a healthy, comfortable indoor environment. This activity not only engaged and entertained the children but also offered them a glimpse into the technical aspects of building and maintaining HVAC systems, which has the potential to inspire future careers in the field.

At Fire & Ice, we believe in serving the community in which we live and work. This initiative reflects a broader vision of literacy that embraces an understanding of the world around us. Thus, it helps kids (and adults) make informed decisions about our environment and appreciate the technology that makes modern life comfortable and sustainable.
