Are you in the market for a new heat pump? Are you worried that yours might not make it through another season? Is your current heat pump seemingly always under repair? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then let me introduce you to the Trane XR17 heat pump. In this video we’ll go over its features, cost, and see who might benefit most from this system.

Hi, I’m Luke with Fire & Ice. We've helped thousands of Central Ohio homeowners find the ideal HVAC system that meets their needs. When it comes to heat pumps, we’re often asked if there’s a model that can lower their energy bills, make the home more comfortable, and be more affordable than higher end options. One of the most popular solutions is the Trane XR17 heat pump. In this video we’ll discuss:

  • What are the features of the Trane XR17 heat pump?
  • What is the Efficiency Rating for the XR17?
  • What Equipment Can I Pair with the Trane XR17?
  • Who’s the right fit for the XR17?
  • How much does the XR17 cost?
  • And finally, what are the next steps?

By the end of this video, you’ll know if the Trane XR17 Heat Pump is right for you.

What are the features of the Trane XR17 heat pump?

Let’s dive in and explore the features of the Trane XR17 heat pump. For starters, it has a two-stage compressor. A two-stage compressor means it delivers two levels of output depending on the need for heating or cooling. On milder days, the Trane XR17 will run at its lower stage at around 70% of its full capacity. When more heat or cooling is needed, it will enter its second stage using 100% of its capacity. This allows the XR17 to run longer and heat or cool your home more evenly. It also helps save on energy since it won’t be running at 100% capacity every time it’s running.

The next feature is the durable design of the Trane XR17. Even though it may not have all the features of higher end heat pumps, that doesn't make the XR17 low-quality. In fact, Trane puts all their equipment they make through rigorous tests to ensure they will perform day in and day out.

What is the efficiency rating of the Trane XR17?

Since heat pumps, like the Trane XR17, are able to both heat and cool, they have two efficiency ratings. When it’s cooling, heat pumps are rated by a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER rating. When they’re heating, they are rated by a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor or HSPF. Both ratings measure the amount of efficiency a heat pump has during an average cooling or heating season. Most heat pumps on the market today range between 14 and 22 SEER and 7.7 to 11 HSPF.  The Trane XR17 is considered a mid-efficiency heat pump with a SEER rating of up to 17.25 and an HSPF rating of up to 9.6.

What Equipment Can I Pair with the Trane XR17?

The XR17 can work with any two-stage or variable speed Trane air handler or furnace. For all-electric systems, some air handler examples include the TEM6 or GAM5. For dual  fuel systems, the Trane S8X2 or Trane S9V2 are some examples of  gas furnaces that can be paired with the Trane XR17 heat pump.

Who is Trane XR17 heat pump a good fit for?

The Trane XR17 heat pump is a good fit for homeowners who plan on living in their home for more than 5 years who want a heat pump that will increase their comfort. It is ideal for homeowners who want to save on energy, as well as those looking for a more affordable heat pump compared to higher-end options.

Thanks to the Trane XR17's two-stage compressor, the XR17 can help address inconsistent temperatures and hot and cold spots between rooms. It can also reduce your energy bills. In fact, homeowners who have switched to an XR17 from an older 10 SEER or less system have saved up to 55% on their HVAC costs.

However, the Trane XR17 might not be a good fit for some homeowners. Some examples include: if you plan to move in the next 5 years, your current single-stage heat pump is already meeting your needs, or you don’t want to invest much money on a new heat pump.

How much does Trane XR17 heat pump cost?

Now down to brass tax, how much does it cost? The Trane XR17 costs between $7,500 and $10,670. At Fire & Ice all of our estimates include the cost of equipment, labor, and any additional fees. For comparison, a new heat pump installation can range between $5,390 and $13,750.

If you have an all-electric system, you’ll need to replace the air handler as well, which can add around $3,850 to $6,600.

There are several factors that can affect the price of a heat pump, such as the size of your home, filters, and other indoor air quality products as well as modifications needed during installation. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to HVAC systems.

Kyle is the best! After hours call for AC not working. The company who installed the unit couldn’t get anyone to our house for over 5 DAYS! Fire and Ice was recommended by a coworker. I called and gave my info for an emergency house call. 10 minutes later Kyle called. Less than An hour later my AC was repaired! Pricewas super reasonable (especially considering it’s after 9 pm) No fuss, no gimmicks and super nice. Kyle you’re our hero!

Great experience having all their people in our home to help us replace both 21 yr old heating & air conditioning units. They were recommended by our son since they did an efficient and quick job in their furnace breakdown. From Roger, who walked us through buying the units, to Floyd & Daniqua, the technicians that installed both Trane units, we found them very courteous, efficient and knowledgeable! We highly recommend Fire & Ice for your HVAC needs!!

Bryan and Nick were both very professional and friendly! When there is someone in your home typically it isn't like you can relax and go about your day but we were totally able to do just that. It is like they were not even here as they worked hard for 9+ hours to get the job done. Please tell them THANK YOU for being so awesome at what they do! Huge kudos to both gentlemen and you are lucky to have them on your team.
