Fire & Ice Heating & Air Conditioning has identified some common problems and heating system repairs and ways to keep them from happening to you.

Modern furnaces are a marvel of reliability and efficiency when it comes to keeping your Columbus, OH home warm during the winter, but they are not indestructible. Over the years, Fire & Ice Heating & Air Conditioning has identified some common problems and heating system repairs AND ways to keep them from happening to you.

Dirty filters

It may sound like a broken record, but dirty filters create multiple problems. First your furnace is going to be less efficient and has to work harder, causing you to spend more money on utility bills. Ultimately your furnace isn't going to last as long because of the increased stress.

Change your filters at recommended intervals. Depending on the filter type that could be every 30 to 90 days. If you have any questions about the correct filter for your furnace or how to change it, Fire & Ice is here to help.

Wear & tear

Heating systems are mechanical units and components will wear out over time. It's impossible to stop the process, but it is possible to slow it down.

The best way is an annual cleaning, inspection, and tune-up by a professionally trained HVAC technician. He or she has the training and experience to spot wear and tear issues before they cause system breakdowns.

Ignition problems

Your furnace has either a pilot light or electronic igniter to light the fuel on fire. If there's no ignition, there's no heat and the house will get very cold.

If the pilot light has gone out, you can follow the instructions in your owner's manual to re-light it. Take note of the color of the flame on the pilot light. If it's any color other than blue, there's a problem and you should call in the experts. Electronic igniters can't generally be serviced by the homeowner.

Problems with the thermostat can mean the furnace won't turn on or the home won't be heated to the proper temperature.

If you suspect a thermostat problem make sure it is set correctly to heat or cool depending on the season. Then adjust the temperature to see if the heat kicks on. If it doesn't seem to be working consult the owner's manual. Some thermostats have batteries that need to be replaced. Other than that, thermostat problems generally require the services of an expert technician.
