At this point, you can call an HVAC service technician, but you’ll often have to wait a few days (or more), especially during the busy season. Meanwhile, to keep you and your loved ones safe and warm, you can toss another log onto the fire, pull out the wool blankets, and dress in layers.

How Can You Tell If Your Furnace Needs Repairs?

In the HVAC industry, there are five tell-tale signs that signal a furnace repair. In this section, we’ll break down each of the five signs, what can cause them, and the next steps to take:

  1. Changes in airflow
  2. Short cycling
  3. Abnormally long runtime
  4. Abnormal sounds and smells
  5. Puddles of water and leaks

Do You Notice Any Changes in Your Airflow?

Changes in airflow refers to when a vent/register can become partially or completely blocked. This may involve a reduction in force from the furnace or a blocked section of your internal ductwork.

Side Note: Ductwork can be cleaned; however, it’s best to leave it to one of our indoor air quality specialists, like we have at Fire and Ice. You can check out our air duct cleaning services page and learn about our process and why it's important to get your ducts cleaned sooner rather than later.

However, if you need clarification on the root cause of your airflow fluctuation, a thorough inspection from one of our knowledgeable and friendly technicians will be able to diagnose the issue.

Nevertheless, there is one solution homeowners can try before calling in the professionals: check your filter and change it if needed. If you need help finding a replacement, check out the link below.

Is Your Furnace Short-Cycling?

This means your furnace turns on and off more frequently than it should. Not only will this rob you and your loved ones of warmth, but it also doesn’t allow the hot and cold air in the house to mix.

When this happens, it can cause stubborn hot and cold spots. This is also hard on your furnace. Think of your HVAC system like a car; the more times it has to start, the quicker it will run out of gas.

The same goes for your residential furnace; the more times it has to start, the more gas and electricity it will use. On top of that, if your HVAC system is frequently short cycling, it can lower the expected lifespan of your HVAC equipment.

Does Your Furnace Have an Abnormally Long Runtime?

On the other hand, if your furnace kicks on and doesn't stop, this is a sign of trouble. One of the best ways to determine if your HVAC system has an abnormally long runtime is if you see a spike in your monthly utility bills.

If it spikes, and you can’t attribute it to the weather or some other factor, it may be that the furnace is underperforming, and you may need a furnace repair, maintenance, or even a new furnace installation.

Do You Hear or Smell Anything Out of the Ordinary?

Abnormal Sounds or Smells- if you hear any banging, rattling, screeching, or other concerning sounds from your residential heating system, you need to contact an HVAC technician immediately.

Bad smells coming from your furnace are also not ideal. So, if you recognize any musty, moldy, or dirty sock smell, it might be caused by a burnt-out motor or a buildup of mold inside your unit. At this point,  it’s best to contact a professional that can diagnose your issue and offer suggestions.

Do You Notice Any Puddles of Water or Leaks?

If you see any water coming from your HVAC system, it's not a good sign and can indicate problems with your home heating and cooling system, such as a damaged heat exchanger and/or a faulty seal on your evaporator coil.

To keep you and your loved ones safe and your HVAC equipment running smoothly for several years, contact an HVAC professional if you see any standing water or leaks.

Hilliard Homeowners: How to Prevent Furnace Repairs

While there is no surefire way to avoid furnace repairs completely; however, you can cut down on the number of service calls you need. With that said, there are several ways in which homeowners can help prevent furnace repairs, such as changing their filters and scheduling regular maintenance.

Change Your Filter

I know you're only halfway through this article, and we have already mentioned changing your filters multiple times; however, this is because it is one of the easiest HVAC maintenance tasks a homeowner can do independently.

Frequently changing your filters can have several benefits, such as cutting down on frequent furnace repairs, lowering your monthly energy bills, and keeping the air in your home clean.

Schedule Preventative Maintenance

This should be a no-brainer, but believe it or not, homeowners go YEARS without having their home heating, and cooling system serviced. According to Bob Vila, there are seven reasons you should never skip your HVAC check-up, including:

  1. Avoiding breakdowns and expensive repairs
  2. A longer life expectancy of your system
  3. Keeps your manufacturer's warranty intact
  4. Protecting your family's comfort
  5. Improves your system's overall energy efficiency
  6. Catch problems before they become detrimental to your system
  7. Maintaining your optimal comfort level all year round

When Should You Get A Furnace Tune-up?

As a general rule of thumb, you should get your HVAC system serviced twice a year, once before winter (generally in the fall) and once before summer (typically done in the spring).

However, if you are a homeowner that tends to forget about your residential HVAC system until it’s too late, at Fire & Ice, we offer customers a maintenance agreement. Our maintenance agreements are affordable, and we have three tiers to choose from; bronze, silver, and gold depending on your budget.

You can learn more about our maintenance plans, their benefits, and costs by visiting our HVAC Maintenance Agreements Homepage or by watching this video:

Manual J Load Calculation

Did you know the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) requires a Manual J Load Calculation? Have you never heard of it? That’s because several local HVAC contractors cut corners and don't take the time to size your HVAC system accordingly.

Fire & Ice requires all our HVAC professionals to perform a Manual J Load Calculation as part of your HVAC estimate. This calculation is the best way to determine the proper size of HVAC equipment for your home.

Without performing a complete Manual J Load Calculation, improper sizing can occur (undersized or oversized), which will lead to several problems, including but not limited to the following:

  •     Increased wear and tear on your system
  •        Poor performance
  •        Premature breakdowns
  •     Wasted energy

So, after a few weeks of having your system, your Fire & Ice sales professional will come back to check on your HVAC system's installation, ensure all pieces and parts are working properly, and answer any questions you may have.

Support for the Long Haul

Another thing that sets Fire & Ice apart from the other local HVAC contractors in Hilliard, Ohio, is our support for the long haul. As mentioned above, we return two weeks after the installation to ensure proper function.

But we don’t stop there; we also follow up with our customers 90 days, six months, and a full calendar year after your installation. Also, at any of these appointments or by calling us directly, you can enroll in one of our in-house maintenance agreements (mentioned in the section above) designed to support homeowners with their HVAC equipment to ensure operation for many years to come.

Fire and Ice has been wonderful to work with! Our new Furnace and AC are working like a dream. We had a number of places come out for estimates and Fire and Ice was the only one who actually went around and measured our windows and home and determined we should get a smaller furnace than what was installed before, saving us money both up front and on efficiency down the road. We were also impressed at the quality of the installation itself, as our old setup was clearly done without much care or thought. Fire and Ice took the time to move pipes and such that were just hanging from my ceiling before, move the humidifier to the proper side of the furnace, move over the ductwork that was not put in a good location, raise our electrical box outside away from the ground, and all kinds of little things to make sure our system runs right for a long time. It's been a few months and our setup runs perfectly. You get what you pay for, and I'm glad we paid for Fire and Ice!

When the 30 year old HVAC system in our house went out Fire and Ice was recommended to me. Brad, my sales representative, showed me a comprehensive list of my options, set me up with financing make a brand new system affordable, and professionally communicated throughout the entire process. The installers, Demetrius, Willard, and Tyler, were fantastic! They were very helpful and professional throughout the entire installation process and walked us through the ins and outs of the final product. The AC works like a dream just in time for the hot summer weather and we could not be happier! Fire and Ice is our go-to recommendation for anyone seeking HVAC work.

Our complete HVAC system was replaced a month ago. We experienced a flawless, informative process from sales to installation. Bryan, our sales pro, performed a detailed anaysis of our home's size, construction & features to develop an evaluation of our HVAC needs to offer the optimum sized equipment and has returned several times since the installation to insure it's proper functioning and our understanding of the entire system. The installation was performed within 3 days of our agreement - with the crew (Jon, Daniqua & Colby) getting the old system removed (furnace & A/C) and the new system installed in a matter of hours - they even modified ductwork and rerouted some lines originally installed by our builder to increase efficiency and give the system a cleaner appearance. Another great surprise was their tenacity with the cleanup - all their work areas were left totally spotless!!! Overall the best contractor performance we have experienced in 35 years of home ownership including having 2 homes built by the area's most reputable developers. The system runs great, is quiet and can now be operated through my phone from anywhere - even if just to insure it's running while at my winter haven. Thank You Fire & Ice!

Fire & Ice was great. Our sales rep, Bryan, was excellent. He was knowledgeable, professional, and didn’t pressure us to make a purchase. Due to our experience with him, we were already planning on using Fire & Ice to replace our old AC, but during the heat wave and storms, my once limping-along-AC decided 20 years was enough cooling and decided it’s job was done. My husband had initially set the meeting with Bryan, but was out of town, leaving me to pick up the sale. Bryan didn’t miss a beat when I emailed him asking to get a new AC installed ASAP. Within two days, my install techs, Demetrius P. and Willard J. were here to install. The excellent service continued. Both were amazing and incredibly professional, even dealing with my very vocal dog with grace every time they entered my house. They completed the job in a timely manner and everything was top notch. They were mindful of the fact that I work from home, and kept noise to an absolute minimum. By the time they left, I could feel the cool air flowing once again. They even took the time to swap out my furnace filter! Loved working with them and will recommend Fire & Ice to my friends & neighbors.

The entire process of having a new furnace and air conditioner installed was awesome. Scheduling the estimate was quick and easy and I didn't have to wait on availability. The estimate was very thorough, and Bryan was extremely helpful in explaining everything. Install was just a few days later based on my schedule (they could have installed sooner) and the install technicians (Bryan, Alontae, Von) were awesome. Very professional and courteous, adhering to local health guidelines the entire time. They also had somebody come out and take photos and videos of the install so they could use it in their training. They took the time to ensure everything was installed properly (my old install wasn't). They were also very helpful to show me everything about the system and new thermostat before they left. Bryan followed up with me a week later and stopped in to check on the install. He's awesome and having a tech come out and tweak a couple things (humidifier and thermostat) to ensure everything runs properly!

One of my good friend’s had a great experience with Fire and Ice, so I went ahead and tried them out. Amazing customers service. Brad was awesome with walking me through the process of getting a new furnace and answered all of my questions. I will be a returning customer and recommend Fire and Ice to all. Update on furnace installed: I can not praise this company enough. The technicians Floyd and Jacob were very professional and the craftsmanship was amazing. You can tell when someone takes pride in their work. Thank you for your hard work. It’s greatly appreciated.

Bryan and Nick were true professionals. They gave me a good heads up when they were going to arrive and did a great job installing the new furnace. They made sure to keep my house clean and walked me through what they did and gave me tips on how to get the best use/life out of my furnace. Will definitely recommend to a friend.

The two technicians arrived exactly when they said they would, immediately began to take care of business. They had more trouble than they anticipated getting the old furnace out but still pretty much finished at the time they told me. The system and heating space were left clean and tidy. they took a few extra minutes to troubleshoot my water tank to get it to ignite which was greatly appreciated. Very nice gentleman throughout the experience and gave me a thorough explanation of the paperwork and how to use the thermostat as well. Was a great experience
