Are you in the market for a heat pump that is easy on the budget and will deliver on efficiency? Let me introduce you to the Carrier Performance 16 heat pump. In this video we’ll review it’s benefits and see who might benefit most from this system.

Hi, My name’s Alex from Fire & Ice. When it comes to heat pumps there are many to choose from and it’s hard to know which one to go with. Every year we help thousands of Central Ohio homeowners determine which heat pump will meet their heating and cooling needs. When our customers are looking for efficiency on a budget the solution is often the Carrier 25HPB6, or better known as the Carrier Performance 16 heat pump. In this video we’ll explore its features, review its efficiency rating, go over compatible equipment options, go over how much it costs, and look into who might benefit most from this heat pump.

What are the features of the Carrier Performance 16 heat pump?

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the features and benefits of the Carrier Performance 16. First up is its single-stage compressor. Which means whenever it kicks on, it's using 100% of its capacity to heat or cool your home. This tried and true technology provides consistent and reliable heating and cooling all year long.

Another feature of note is its attractive yet durable design. It’s designed with a galvanized steel cabinet and coil guard painted to protect against dings, dents, and other outdoor threats.

And living here in Central Ohio you’ll likely take advantage of its Hybrid Heat technology that automatically switches between electric or gas heat to help keep energy costs as low as possible. On its own the Carrier Performance 16 is capable of providing heat in temperatures as low as -10°. That’s far lower than most heat pumps on the market that struggle to provide heat when temperatures are in the mid 30s.

What is the efficiency rating of the Carrier Performance 16?

Unlike air conditioners, heat pumps are able to both heat and cool and have two efficiency ratings. On the cooling side, heat pumps are rated by a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER rating. For heating they use a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor or HSPF. Both ratings measure the amount of efficiency a heat pump has during an average cooling or heating season. The carrier Performance 16 has a SEER rating of up to 17 and an HSPF rating of up to 9.5. For comparison, most heat pumps on the market range between 14 and 22 SEER and have an HSPF rating between 7.7 and 11.

What Equipment Can I Pair with the Carrier Performance 16?

The Performance 16 can work with any single-stage Carrier air handler or furnace. For all-electric homes, you’ll want to consider the Carrier  FB4 air handler. For dual fuel systems, the Carrier Comfort 80 or Comfort 95 are some examples of compatible furnaces.

Who is Carrier Performance 16 heat pump a good fit for?

The Carrier Performance 16 heat pump is ideal for the budget conscious homeowner looking for a boost in their energy efficiency. This straightforward heat pump can deliver reliable heating and cooling for your home. And if you live in Central Ohio and rely on electricity to heat your home in the winter you’re well aware of how expensive that can be. Fortunately, the Performance 16 heat pump can adequately provide heat in temperatures as low as -10°.

And since it’s a budget friendly option it might be worth considering if you’re planning to move in the near future and are looking to maximize your home’s resale value.

I will say the Performance 16 isn’t for everyone though. As a single-stage heat pump it won’t be able to solve comfort issues like uneven temperatures or hot and cold spots. And if you’re sensitive to noise, at 67 decibels, it’s not the quietest heat pump on the market. For comparison, an average conversation is between 60 and 70 decibels.

How much does Carrier Performance 16 heat pump cost?

And now for the cost question. The Carrier Performance 16 costs between $6,400 and $9,300. At Fire & Ice all of our estimates include the cost of equipment, labor, and any additional fees. For comparison, a new heat pump installation can range between $5,400 and $15,200.

If you have an all-electric system, you’ll need to replace the air handler as well, which can add around $2,700 to $7,600. And adding heat strips can be an additional 250 to 650 dollars.

There are several factors that can affect the price of a heat pump, such as the size of your home, filters, and other indoor air quality products as well as modifications needed during installation. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to HVAC systems.
