The Cleveland Browns became a team in 1944 when Arthur McBride, a prosperous Cleveland business owner, purchased a franchise in the All-American Football Conference (AAFC). He hired Paul Brown, a well-respected football coach at the high school, college, and service levels, to become the team's first coach. Brown would eventually become the namesake of the team, a hall of fame coach, and is considered one of the greatest coaches of all time.
The Browns won four straight championships in the AAFC before it dissolved in 1949. Upon joining the NFL in 1949, The Browns won their first season in the NFL.
