One aspect of the checklist above is a step called commissioning. There are two types of HVAC companies: those that commission new equipment, and those that don’t. The ones that don’t are probably paid by the job, which is called “piece rate.” They get paid by the job. If they can hurry through an installation, not testing the system so that it matches manufacturers’ recommendations, they might be able to wrap up in four hours or so. That can give them time to do another rushed job before the day comes to a close. That’s more money in their pockets.
